    Crop loan, property, water tax payment deferred by 3 months

    In the wake of people losing jobs due to the 21-day lockdown period, the State government, on Tuesday, issued orders to cooperative banks and other local bodies not to collect crop loans, property and water taxes and EMIs in Tamil Nadu Housing Boards for three months.

    Chief Minister Edappadi K Palaniswami also requested house owners not to collect rents for two months and urged people to extend cooperation to the government. In a detailed order, Palaniswami said, “The time for payment of crop loan obtained in cooperative organisations has been extended for three months. EMIs for housing loans obtained in housing cooperatives will also be exempted for three months.”

    After a detailed meeting with 11 teams headed by senior IAS officers, the Chief Minister took several important decisions related to exemption of paying taxes. The EMI for TNHB, loans obtained in fishing and handlooms cooperative societies, loans obtained by micro, small and medium scale enterprises (MSMEs) from Tamil Nadu Industrial Investment Corporation (TIIC), companies which have obtained soft loans from SIPCOT and maintenance amount to be paid for SIPCOT by companies functioning inside the SIPCOT campus will also be exempted for three months.

    The State has also formed a special COVID Relief and Management Plan for Rs 200 crore to rescue 2,000 MSMEs who have obtained loan in TIIC. The MSMEs would be given urgent loans for capital needs. “Right now we are in Stage 2 of COVID19 spread and to prevent the disease from entering Stage 3, people should cooperate by following the time restrictions and by staying inside their houses,” Palaniswami said.

    Later in the day, the Chief Minister met Governor Banwarilal Purohit and briefed him about the steps taken by the government to contain the spread of the virus.
