“This would not be possible without the active participation of the State,” Coir Board Chairman CP Radhakrishnan said, addressing industrialists at the inaugural of INTEC 2017 International Machine Tools and Industrial Fair in Coimbatore on Thursday.

Radhakrishnan was confident that this growth is possible though the exports for the financial year 2016-17 stood at just Rs. 2,281 cr. “This is an increase from the 1,651 cr exports the previous financial year,” he said and added that 51 per cent of the country’s total coir export was from Tamil Nadu. “This was possible because of support from the State Government,” he said.

Stating the quality of coir fibre and pith was high in TN, he expressed the need for producing value added products to contribute to the targeted export by 2025. He said the Government at the Centre has sanctioned 19 Coir Clusters, of which nine were for TN.

He appealed to the State Government to sanction land for establishing a modern coir showroom in Vellore. State Minister for Municipal Administration and Rural Development SP Velumani said he would take it up with the CM at the earliest and get it sanctioned.
