Principal Secretary to Government (MSME) Mangat Ram Sharma told DTNext that the industrial estate has been initiated by Coimbatore District Small Industries Association (CODISSIA).

He said around 350 industrial units would occupy the estate sprawling an area of about 225 acres at Mopiripalayam, near Sulur, on the outskirts of the city. “Earlier this week, the Government has also given the green signal for the conversion of agricultural lands acquired for this purpose to be converted for industrial use,” he said and added that Rs 10 cr has been sanctioned for laying roads and for infra at the industrial estate.

Sharma said that over the years, industrial estates were developed only by the State Industries Promotion Corporation of Tamilnadu Ltd. (SIPCOT). “Since private players are also capable of developing such industrial estates, we have given them permission. It also saves time and money for the government. When SIPCOT develops an industrial estate, we spend Rs 20 lakh an acre,” he said.

The Principal Secretary said that they would have to spend Rs 45 cr to Rs 50 cr to develop an industrial estate for the one that is coming up at Mopiripalayam. He added this cost is borne by the private firm in this case. More associations and organisations are coming forward to collaborate with the government to establish such industrial estates.

He said this year, they would be sanctioning such projects in Madurai and Ramnad in an area of around 50 acres to 60 acres  each to relocate industries that are functioning in the city and town areas.
