At a popular idli shop, a customer has a plate of ghee Pongal and coffee taking his bill to Rs 75. On this, a levy of CGST at 9 per cent and SGST at 9 per cent is put, driving the total bill to Rs 88.50. The question arises: are there two different GSTs or a single tax split into two?

The supplier is in Tamil Nadu and the recipient of the supply of these food products is also in TN. Hence, it is an intra-state supply. On such a supply transaction, the GST will have to be paid to both the Centre and the State at equal proposition at the rate applicable for the goods supplied. In this case, the food preparation mentioned in this bill will attract 18 per cent. Therefore 9 per cent will have to be paid as SGST to the state.
