With the five southern states having adopted the Atmos audio technology well, this region alone has 280+ screens (installed or committed as of September 2018).
Ashim Mathur, Senior Director Marketing, Emerging Markets, Dolby Laboratories, tells us, “Today, we have 450+ screens equipped with Atmos across India (installed or committed as of September 2018), and over 400+ Indian titles that have released in Atmos. In Tamil Nadu alone, we have 100+ screens, and half of them are in Chennai, which is the first city to get the technology way back in December 2012. The state and its capital love their cinema. We will continue to bolster our presence by working with most exhibitor partners and content creators.”
Giving us an overview of the action on the movie releases front, Mathur says the company is buoyed by the adoption of the Atmos technology in films pan-India. He adds, “Great content drives adoption of technology. There are over 400+ Indian titles that have released in Atmos, in six different Indian languages. About 260+ Atmos titles have released in South Indian languages, with over 140 titles in Tamil, 70+ titles in Telugu and 50+ titles in Malayalam.”
The company is also seriously pursuing newer avenues for penetration in the streaming space with Over the Top (OTT) content providers such as Netflix, Amazon Prime and YuppTV making inroads into more households. On the potential of such associations in the next few years, Mathur believes, “OTT platforms are rapidly growing in India and streaming content is being vastly consumed. Content streaming services like Voot, YuppTV, etc use Dolby Audio. Recently, Voot announced all its Originals in Dolby Audio.”
