Varun and Samyuktha Hegde reached the premises even before the scheduled time of the interview and spent sometime clicking selfies. After our photographer arrived to click pictures of the lead pair, they started talking to us about their film Puppy, which is releasing on Friday. The movie drew everyone’s attention a few months ago when the motion poster of the film released with the portraits of Nithyananda and pornstar Johnny Sins hanging on the wall while Varun and Yogi Babu were checking out something on their laptop.
The trailer of the film that released last week went on to become a huge hit among the youngsters. “We did not make the film with a specific target audience in mind. Puppy would cater to the family audience as well. People can come to theatres with their families and can have a good laugh,” says Samyuktha. Varun explains in detail and says that the trailer cuts and motion poster were made to bring in some connect to the audience. “I don’t deny the fact that the film doesn’t have any adult connect. However, this is not a film like Iruttu Arayil Murattu Kutthu or Trisha Illana Nayanthara that had dialogues with suggestive innuendoes. The content in Puppy will justify why the trailer cut and motion posters were designed in such a manner,” he tells us.
“The film will in fact change people’s approach towards parenting. Strict parents instigate our children to wrong doing. Marimuthu plays a strict father to Varun in Puppy and restraint him from doing certain things. His curiosity makes him do exactly that and that is what Puppy is about,” the actress divulges.
Puppy is Varun’s first film in a lead role and he clarifies that he wasn’t sceptical in taking up the project. “I play Prabhu, a ‘morattu single’ in the film. The characterisation and the film’s content were convincing. I have seen how my home banner Vels Films International has produced films with good content. So, I saw this as a solid platform as my debut and took it up. We completed the film in 30 days. Do watch out for Yogi Babu’s comedy. He has utilised the space well.” Samyuktha said, “I play a girl from Madurai and the name of my character is Ramya. There will be similarities to my role in Comali. Ramya is a very cool girl and when someone tests it, she proves them wrong,” she smiles. On a concluding note, Varun says the story has yet another interesting lead character, played by a dog. “His name in the film is Puppy and has a played a significant role.”
