Imagine bringing together the most popular stars of the 80’s and creating a film based on the iconic roles they portrayed. This is what musician-director, James Vasanthan has done in Oh, Andha Naatkal. The composer has brought Radikaa, Khushbu, Suhasini and Urvasi together to provide the audience with a deep sense of nostalgia.

Speaking to DT Next, James narrates how the script came about. “When actresses hit late 30’s and 40’s, their roles are often restricted to annis (sisters-in-law) or ammas (mothers). So while discussing with my wife, we spoke how an ensemble of veteran stars could be portrayed on our silver screen. I wrote a script about four women, who studied together many decades ago but had lost touch somehow and meet during a school alumni event. It explores friendship, family, love and humour.”

James speaks about the filming experience. He says, “I had my own apprehensions but once we went to Melbourne to shoot, we thoroughly enjoyed it. Though we faced some issues, none of these actresses ever complained. We later returned to film some scenes in Chennai.”

Revealing an interesting detail, James adds, “There is one classical song which I feel will grab everyone’s attention as it is sung by one of the characters that is inspired by Suhasini’s role in Sindhu Bhairavi.” James concludes that he has three other films to compose and has started working on a new script.
