Reporter’s diary: Public woes take a back seat, officials promoted at rapid pace

There is a common perception that government departments work at snail’s pace and take an inordinate time to clear files of public interest and the Greater Chennai Corporation is no exception.

For instance, the Corporation Commissioner had taken more than a week to approve a recently conducted census on dogs’ population in the city, which had delayed any action to be taken to control the canine population.

However, when it comes to promoting the officials (who have clout among the top brass), the Corporation works, apparently, at speed of light. This reporter was shocked to find that the civic body had created new postings and promoted the officials in a week.

“A Government Order was passed on February 25 to create the new postings and the special council of the civic body passed a resolution the next day. Among the promoted officials, there are many allegations against an official,” a source said. The Commissioner issued a circular implementing the Government Order and resolution and directed the promoted officials to take charge immediately. While talking to this reporter, an official of the civic body said that the files can move very quickly if one has a well-established link with the Secretariat and sang a popular song of lyricist Kannadasan ‘Yarum Irukkum Idathil Irundhukondal Ellam Sowkiyamey (All things will work well when one is in the right place).’

Sadly, public woes are obviously in the wrong place (at the city corporation).
