Chennai

Subbaiah S (48), Ironing man

I came to the city after attending Class 10 public examinations in 1984. An acquaintance helped me set up a makeshift ironing shop in Anna Nagar. After eight years, I left for Saudi Arabia and worked there for 10 years. When I returned to the country, I wanted to provide my children with a quality education.

Therefore, I brought my kids and wife, S Revathy, to the city and started to press clothes for a living again.  My eldest daughter is in the final year of graduation. She wants to do post-graduation after this. My son is in Class 10. I always tell my kids that education is the biggest asset. I never want them to end up like me, struggling for a livelihood. I want them to be in a better situation and only education will take an individual higher in future. We can overcome any problem with courage and confidence. At this time, education is the only asset which can take us forward in life.
