Slice Of Life: ‘I quit being a dairy farmer after diabetes affected my health’
Every person has a story to share. This column puts the spotlight on the people of Chennai, faces we see but rarely interact with — giving a glimpse into their struggle.
Chennai
I currently work as a security guard but my life was quite different. My grandfather migrated from Andhra Pradesh and my family owned many cows and buffaloes. I took over the trade from him and became a prosperous dairy farmer. For many years, the milk that I would supply was the best but then, diabetes, age and fatigue got the better of me. I knew I had to ‘take it easy’ so from being a dairy farmer, I took up watchman duty two years ago. I work from 7 am to 7 pm every day and get a decent salary. Things have been well except for the eight pills that I need to take every day. This bugs me even more than the expenses because the latter is not really a problem — the government hospital here is very good, and almost all tests and medicines are free.
