Q and A: ‘Fisheries dept should stand by fishermen’

We are using the area for our occupational purposes since 1945 and this is our traditional working place. But the Chennai Corporation is trying to evict us from the Loop Road. As per the street vending rules, any market that functions for over 50 years should be treated as a traditional market. Even the fisheries department also refuse to help us.

It is the duty of the fisheries department to stand by the fishermen. During the three meetings conducted by the civic body, we have requested the fisheries director and other officials to provide legal aid. But they are refusing to do so. They are ones who should certify that the fishermen are using the place traditionally.

At the same time, when we cite clauses in CRZ rules that safeguard fishermen interest, they do not want to listen. Even the court has directed to regulate the fish vendors. Now, we have imposed self-regulation.
