I am from Chennai and I set up my shop along with my husband 30 years ago. We belong to Velachery and have shifted our shop from various spots in the same stretch due to trouble from various people. My life has never been easy in 30 years as every day passes in the fear of debts which have multiplied enormously.
When we started our business 30 years ago, ours used to be the only shop in this locality but now there are eight others. Initially, people knew the goodness of tender coconut and were keen to drink it at least twice a day. Now, times have changed and they have shifted to aerated drinks.
Our business is seasonal. In summer, people who want to beat the heat consume tender-coconuts, but in winter it is very dull. Heat or rain, business or no business, I have always stayed here. I have no holidays. We get our supply from various places like Pollachi, Salem and Vellore.
When there is rain in any of these places, the load doesn’t arrive, and business is shut for the day. The prices, too, vary according to the season. People aren’t ready to spend more than Rs 30 on tender coconuts and tend to bargain. So, we have kept a fixed price board here. My key to happiness in life is to earn honestly till last breath and be content with what you have.
