Slice of Life: ‘I do my best to encourage kids to use bicycles’
Every person has a story to share. This column puts the spotlight on the people of Chennai, faces we see but rarely interact with — giving a glimpse into their struggle.
Chennai
I never got the chance for schooling due to my family background. I used to work at bicycle shops in Tirupathi while my father was a daily wage worker. Ten years ago, I got married and I, along with my wife Padma, came to Kancheepuram and we opened a bicycle service shop in the Kancheepuram market. I love my job and I can say that I am an expert. I open my shop at 8 am and close by 6 pm, even on Sundays. My business was very good in the earlier days. During that time, most of the people were using bicycles. Now even school students don’t prefer to ride bicycles. This generation of kids does not know that riding bicycle is a great exercise. Parents should encourage their children to use bicycles more and teach them its benefits. I don’t have children, but I treat all the kids coming to my shop as my own. I do my best to encourage them to use bicycles.
