Chennai

I was born in a village in Villupuram, from where I came to Chennai about 30 years ago and settled down here. When I was in my native village, not many considered higher studies to be of any importance. So I studied only till Class 8, after which I dropped out of school. After I came to the city, I first began working at a coal shop like a salesman. That job helped me earn Rs 30-40 a month. I managed to save some money from the monthly salary, and used that to for my marriage expenditure. I spent Rs 905 on my marriage, and still remember how big an event it was. My family includes wife, four daughters and a son.

After that job, I decided to change my occupation. But I did not want to work under an employer anymore. So I bought a bullock-cart and started to transport load. I continued this until 2009. But that year, I suffered a heart attack. The doctors told me that I should not lift heavy weights anymore, which forced me to look for a less strenuous job. So I had to sell my bullock cart. It took me a few years to recover, after which I started to work as a security guard. I earn Rs 7,000 per month now and barely manage to survive with it. Medications are so costly that I cannot afford them. So I stopped taking my medicines.
