Slice of Life: ‘I will switch trade if sand biz picks up again’
Every person has a story to share. This column puts the spotlight on the people of Chennai, faces we see but rarely interact with — giving a glimpse into their struggle.
Chennai
I was born in Cheiyur and I am a B Sc graduate. I own two lorries and was doing sand business earlier. As the business was down for a long period, I switched to wholesale coconut business recently. I am married and have two school-going children. I buy coconuts from Marapakkam near Puducherry and sell them to shops in Tambaram for a wholesale price. I have retail business, too. I have a good number of customers as quality is assured with my produce. Now there is no use for my lorries. They are parked at home and I am paying their tax and insurance for nothing. If the sand business picks up again, I will go back to it as I have been doing it for many years. My daughter wants to become an Aeronautical engineer and my son wants to work with Indian Railways. I will work hard and support them as much as I can to achieve their dreams.
