The haphazard parking of vehicles and the improper placing of garbage bins on New Avadi Road result in traffic congestion on the stretch between Nadhamuni theatre and Chennai Rail Museum, especially during peak hours, complain motorists.

With parked auto rickshaws and cars occupying one side of the New Avadi Road, not only is the traffic flow hit during the peak hours, but it also creates a bottleneck for the movement of pedestrians. It also triggers a cascading effect of traffic snarls on the stretch.

“Driving a car in the city has never been a smooth experience. The issue worsens, particularly during the peak hours,” S Manickam, a resident of Padi. Though the stretch has the width of a four-lane road, the parking issue has reduced the width to three-lane.

The public also complained of garbage bins taking up space. “Not only the parking of vehicles but also the placing of garbage bins take up the road space. At least four bins are placed on the stretch,” said S Abbas. He noted that in the absence of a road median, two-wheelers often change the lane, unmindful of other motorists.

R Ramamoorthy, an MTC bus driver, complained that several workshops are parked vehicles haphazardly.

“The Highways department and the city traffic police should act immediately on the illegal parking of vehicles. Besides, the Corporation should remove those garbage bins that occupy space,” he said. A traffic policeman at Villivakkam, however, said that they had often been impounding those vehicles found parked haphazardly. He said that fines are also imposed on vehicles parking at ‘No parking’ areas.
