Reporter’s Diary: Of recyclable birth control options and moral yardsticks for the youth
Every once in a while, as reporters, we get to attend a press meet that leaves us gobsmacked, not just at the absurdity of the proceedings that ensue, but also at the line of enquiry that some journalists opt for. At one such recent meet, by a maker of prophylactics (plain-speak for condoms), the stage was set for hilarity beyond comprehension.

For starters, it seemed strange that the subject of safe sex, that demands attention of both men and women— in equal measure, found no takers among female journalists. The meet was conspicuous by their absence, which also let the conversations veer into subjects, usually spoken about in whispers. The icing on the proverbial cake was when a journalist, in all innocence probed the spokesperson of the company, and asked whether condoms were reusable. Of course, a course correction was in order and he rephrased it as, whether condoms could be recycled, an important question, considering the state of the climate and the concerns surrounding recycling.
What was also a bone of contention (sincerely forgive the pun) was the fact that barely a few journalists could keep a straight face, or not break into giggles, when posing a question to the spokesperson, who had no option but to humour the questioners. The event was also a reflection of the things we would rather joke about, but would, for the sake of propriety, choose only to refer to, using euphemisms. In all fairness, the conversations have to begin at home. And no snickering please...
