Slice of Life: ‘I give priority to my family over business’
Every person has a story to share. This column puts the spotlight on the people of Chennai, faces we see but rarely interact with — giving a glimpse into their struggle.
Chennai
I was born and brought up in Chennai. All these years, I was a homemaker living in a rented house. However, six months ago, I shifted to my own house after which my life changed. Five months ago, I started an organic food store along with my neighbour. We sell only organic products like grains, legumes, dairy products which is supplied from Senji. I have two children, a daughter who is pursuing her second year in college and a son studying in Class 11. Now my day starts at 5 am. After finishing all the household chores to send my children to their college and school, I go to the shop around 8 am and spend the next eight hours there. As there are no similar shops nearby, we do not face any competition and the business is running well. We earn minimum of Rs 1,000 per day during the normal days, and the income will be more during festivals like Vinayaka Chaturthi and Krishna Jayanthi. I know that I can grow and improve my business if I spend more time at the shop. But for me, the family is the main priority. I prefer to spend my day with them during special occasions. We are taking efforts to improve the business and soon we will also add more organic products in our shop.
