E Shankaran (62), security guard

I am from Chennai and stay in Vyasarpadi. Immediately after I graduated from school, I got a government job at the city Corporation in 1977. I retired only two years ago. I rested for a while and then decided to work as a security guard. I did not like to be idle and wanted to support my family financially. I joined a private security company on contract in April and work night shifts here. But, since I have been staying awake at nights, it has affected my health. I have also lost some weight. I used to get Rs 35,000 per month when I was a government emplyee, but now I get Rs 9,000. I live with my wife and son. My daughter got married a few years ago. My son has mental health problems and he had to quit work 10 years ago. We are getting him treated at a government hospital. He used to work in a lift gate manufacturing company, but his nature of work affected him a lot and he became distressed. Now, he cannot work and stays at home. I hope that he will be fine soon. I will continue to work till my son recovers completely and starts taking the responsibility of the family.
