Slice of Life: ‘I will continue to work even after my son gets a job’

My native is Vellore. Due to family situations then, I could not continue my studies after Class 8. In 1972, along with my family, I came to Chennai and we opened a snack stall in the city. For a few years, the business was good. But then the profit from the shop started to decline. Meanwhile, I got married and we had a son and a daughter. While my daughter is married and living in the city itself now, my son is searching for a job.
I began to work as a loader in 1992 as I could not earn enough money from the snack stall to run the household. I stayed in Tambaram and worked as a loader. I had regular customers and used to work almost every day. Years have gone by and now my old age is bothering me. I cannot work like before. A few years back, I used to work from the morning till the evening and still be okay. It’s not the same now but I continue to work very hard. Though I want to work more, I am not physically fit to toil like before.
My only aim in life is to arrange a wedding for my son while I am still employed. Like most of the youngsters, my son who is a graduate. But he hasn’t got a job yet. If my son gets a good job, he would take some burden off my shoulders. However, even if he gets a job, I would continue to work until I can.
