Citizen Connect: Sewage water floods Vanniar Street in West KK Nagar for more than 10 days

Speeding vehicles splash water on pedestrians, complain residents

But, since it lies between two major roads — Arcot Road and Raja Mannar Salai — it remains one of the most ignored stretches, complain residents of the locality. While the stretch was used as an unofficial parking lot for abandoned vehicles and mini trucks, now, liquid sewage has inundatedthe road.

“It has been more than 10 days since the road has been flooded with sewage from the drains. It is not clear where the pipe is leaking as the entire road is flooded with murky, foul smelling water. The road remains busy round the clock as motorists use this stretch to join Arcot Road in Virugambakkam. Speeding vehicles splash water on pedestrians. It is also a school zone and hundreds of students use this street every day. Apart from the stench, kids also have the risk of catching fever,” says Balamurugan, an advocate wholives near the street.

Apart from the regular shops on one side of the road, the Central Warehousing Corporation on Arcot Road has entry-exit gate on this stretch through which container trucks enter to load and unload freights. “There are Tangedco’s electric junction boxes on the pavement adjoining the compound wall of the warehouse and they too have gone under the sewage water. There have been several incidents of pedestrians getting electric shock after live wires were exposed in areas with waterlogging, yet no action has been taken to fix this situation,” said another resident of KK Nagar (West).

When contacted, Sasi Kala, Executive Engineer of Valasaravakkam (Zone 11), said that the stretch falls under the jurisdiction of Kodambakkam Zone (10). But, Natarajan, Zonal Officer of Kodambakkam, was not available for comments despite repeated attempts to reach him.
