Reporter’s Diary: Police team goes to arrest ATM burglar, rescues mentally-ill man instead
A few days ago, the JJ Nagar police nabbed a person when he tried to break open an ATM of Andhra Bank in their jurisdiction. So, when the Koyambedu police station received a call from Indian Bank’s Mumbai office that a man was seen inside their ATM kiosk at Iyyappa Nagar in the wee hours of Monday, a team of police personnel rushed to the spot.

However, to their disappointment or rather much relief, they realised that he was a mentally-challenged man. They tried to question him, but the person could not reply coherently.
While he gave different names every time, he said his age was 10 (in Hindi), while he could be in his late 20s. But the police did not lose patience. They took him to the police station and fed him breakfast and lunch and admitted him at a home for mentally-challenged near Veerapuram.
Two policemen spent the entire day to make sure he was in safe hands. While the police personnel could be appreciated for their gesture, if the banks had their own security guards for ATM kiosks, police personnel need not have toiled so hard for a case that should have been handled by the State Social Welfare Department.
