Citizen Connect: Poor quality of newly-laid Porur-Kundrathur road irks motorists

Residents and motorists are irked over the poor quality of road laying works as the newly laid Porur-Kundrathur road has already started to peel off from the surface.

“The road was in a poor condition for several months and the officials started to relay the road after the monsoon started. The new road could not withstand even one brief spell of rain,” Nagendiran, a motorist, said.

He added that the road is a major State highway connecting the city and several heavy vehicles use the road.

“Due to frequent movement of huge trucks and the damaged road, two-wheeler riders are in danger. This is because of the poor execution by the government,” he alleged.

A resident, on condition of anonymity, said that even though the new road is of poor quality, the officials had stopped the road laying works midway.

Rajkumar, another motorist, pointed out that due to the peeling of the bituminous, loosened gravel is spread across the road. “These loosened gravels, if not removed, will become deadly as two-wheeler riders cannot apply the brake on them. Loosened gravel makes the road slippery,” he said.

He added that the road beyond Porur junction, leading towards the city, is in a good condition, but the officials’ apathy is noticeable on the Porur-Kundrathur stretch. The road is being relaid as a part of road extension project.

Residents and motorists are urging the government and the Highways Department to repair the damaged portions of the road and resume the works.

“Also, the work is proceeding in a snail’s pace. Even though the work was started five months ago, they could not complete it. Now, it has been stopped,” a resident riled.

Before the new road got damaged, the residents were opposing storing of gravel stones on the road.

“Near Kovur, stones were dumped on one side of the road that shrunk the width of the road. If the government take measures to complete the work immediately, we will be free of lots of hardships,” Nagendiran said.

Meanwhile, Highway department officials assured to repair the damaged portions and said that the work would be completed soon.
