V Unni Krishnan (50), Tea seller
Born in Kerala, I came to Chennai about 35 years ago after completing Class 10. In the initial days after reaching here, I started to work in a tea stall owned by my uncle. As years passed by, I tried my hand at different occupations. I worked as a security guard, autorickshaw driver, and even put up a chicken stall. But, I was not satisfied with any of these jobs. Later, I decided to supply tea. I started the business 15 years ago in Tambaram. I used to go on a cycle selling tea to shops in Tambaram. As most of them love to have my tea, the business began to pick up soon. The people loved the taste of my tea and used to buy from me every day. Over the years, I have many regular customers, many of whom are more than just customers; they have grown very close to me and we care about one another. Two years ago, I suffered a heart ailment. When I was in need of money for surgery, it was my customers who came forward to help me and take care of the expenses. They are the reason that I am alive today. I love Chennai and would never go from here because all the people here are very loving and caring. I have two children. My daughter got married and my son is working. I am working hard to buy a house. It is a dream for me, which I hope to achieve soon in the future.
