Slice of Life: ‘Though art is liked by many, people hesitate to buy it’

I was infected by poliovirus at the age of four, and I discontinued studies in Class six. Later, I started learning art and craftworks. I started by making artworks for friends and then put up a stall to sell my work. The business was good even with my first stall. That is when I decided to start a business. I even compiled all my paintings into an album and exhibited them. My parents abandoned me when I was young. My grandmother took care of me. She was the one who motivated me to start the business as my educational background was not enough for any other job. With the income I receive by selling paintings, I was able to make a living. Now I am married and my husband is very supportive and encourages me to work more.  I have received many district and State awards from the government and associations for differently abled. Though my paintings are admired by many, people hesitate to buy art. That is the challenge of my business. I have such a painting at home. I painted Lord Rama on a 4X3 feet canvas and it costs Rs 2 lakh. No one was ready to buy it though it was much appreciated and it still remains with me. In the future, I wish to donate money and do whatever I can for the orphaned children.
