Citizen Connect: Tipplers frequent broken compound wall near Perambur Bus Terminus, complain residents

Commuters and residents near the Perambur Bus Terminus have long been complaining of a broken compound wall which not only allows free passage to the commuters towards Perambur Railway station, but also makes it an open place for tipplers to gather during odd hours, making the area unsafe for daily commuters.

“The compound wall near the Perambur Bus Terminus broke because of an overgrown tree on the other side. The tree rests on the wall and a street light pole next to it and the condition of the compound wall has been worsening every day,” said S Selvi, a resident of 100-ft Road in Perambur.

Residents and the daily commuters say that the height of the Perambur High Road has increased significantly over the years. “The wall in the front is only about 3 feet tall. It needs to be reconstructed because the compound wall has cracked at multiple places and needs to be rebuilt to stop the open passage to the railway station,” said commuter R Sathya.

Commuters also complain that the nearby TASMAC shop near the bus terminus increases the nuisance in the area. They claim that regulars at the shop sit near the compound wall to drink. “The area is unsafe because of the tipplers being present almost throughout the day. It is not safe for women to use that stretch after dusk,” said another commuter and resident of Perambur S Preethi.

The residents also say that the street light pole and compound wall may collapse soon if the tree is cut or if it falls down. They claim that the authorities have been alerted about the problem, but no action has been taken yet.

When contacted, regional civic authorities said that the area falls under the jurisdiction of the Railways and hence, railway authorities should reconstruct the compound wall. The railway authorities, however, have not responded to DT Next’s questions.
