After Korattur was added to the Corporation limits when the city limits were expanded in 2011, the work to lay underground sewage and water pipeline and stormwater drain were taken up. But it has been going on since then, due to which, many interior and even main roads here are frequently dug up. These are not re-laid properly, leaving the interior roads in Korattur north in tatters.
Motorists in particular complained about the pothole-ridden First Main Road, Parthasarathy Street at TVS Nagar, and streets in Annai Nagar, Ellaiyamman Nagar and Srinivasapuram in Korattur North. The interior road in TVS Nagar, which connects with the Water Canal Road, has become unmotorable after the recent rain.
The Water Canal Road is an important link road for the people residing in Surapet, Pudur and Oragadam to reach the Jawaharlal Nehru Salai. “As the police have put up barricades to prevent motorists from taking a right turn in the service road to reach the Korattur north signal, they have to take the First Main Road and Parthasarathy Street to reach the junction. Due to the bad condition of the interior road, the motorists are risking their lives by driving on the wrong side of the busy Jawaharlal Nehru Salai,” said K Venugopal, a residentof Puthagaram.
Srinivasapuram Main Road that connects Korattur to Ambattur is another stretch that is in a bad state. With the vehicular subway works under way at Korattur, the motorists must take this road as an alternative route to access south side of Korattur. “Due to constant digging, the road is riddled with potholes and craters. During rain, it is filled with slush from the bridge works, making it risky for two-wheeler riders. Srinivasapuram 1st, 2nd and 3rd Main Roads are no better,” said R Kanagasundaram, a resident of Ellaiamman Nagar.
Madhanang Kuppam Road, Shanti Nagar Main Road, streets in Venkataraman Nagar are other such stretches that are crying for attention, said the people here.
When asked, a senior Corporation official said the interior roads would be re-laid only after the completion of all the civic works. “We would take up road repair works shortly in the badly damaged stretches of the interior roads,” the official said.
