North Korattur is one of the rapidly developing residential localities in North Chennai and the Greater Chennai Corporation is involved in the process of providing basic amenities in the locality.
However, residents complain about the lack of basic amenities. While there is a long pending demand from the residents to lay the roads, they also demand Chennai Corporation to clear garbage regularly.
The problem of garbage accumulation is severe at TVS Nagar and Anbu Nagar, which is located close to 100 Feet Road. For instance, in TVS Nagar, even though the Corporation has placed a board not to dump garbage, residents complain that commercial establishments dump waste there, creating a nuisance to residents.
B Manjula, a homemaker from North Korattur, said, “Garbage accumulation has turned into a huge issue on several streets in North Korattur.”
She added conservancy workers refuse to clear garbage from bins even if the residents ask them to. Workers claim that they have been asked to do door-to-door collection only. Residents urged Corporation officials to intervene and instruct conservancy workers to clear the bins and also collect garbage from roadsides.
A resident said that toilet seats to used beds can be seen dumped in the area. They fear that it could be a health hazard. Chandramohan, a social activist from North Korattur, said that the waste, if not cleared regularly, could spread diseases. The Corporation should take extra care to keep the city clean during the times of a pandemic.
Chandramohan added that miscreants dump waste in the spot even though there is a board warning against it and CCTV cameras in the area. Even as the offence continues, the Corporation has not taken any action. When a Corporation official was contacted, he assured that the garbage will be cleared at the earliest
