Chief Minister Jayalalithaa appointed women police superintendents in nine districts across Tamil Nadu on Tuesday. Barring Chennai, the police department in all other 31 districts of the state functions under the Superintendent of Police. RV Ramya Bharathi, 29, is among the nine women IPS officers appointed for the districts in a reshuffle effected by the Tamil Nadu Government on Tuesday. Her posting is notable because at 29, she is the youngest of the district superintendents.
Bharathi, who was 22 when she became an IPS officer, was earlier the SP of Thiruvannamalai district. Her new post as SP for Coimbatore district is said to be a very challenging one.
Besides her, Senthil Kumari for Vellore, Mutharasi for Kancheepuram and Ponni for Thiruvannamalai have been appointed as some of the other district SPs. Subbulakshmi will take over Salem while Sonal Chandra will be the SP for Perambalur and Rajeshwari for Trichy. Vandhitha Pande will take over Karur and Uma will be the new SP of Pudukottai. The CM has also appointed women deputy commissioners at many of the corporations.
Women Power
- Jayalalithaa pioneered setting up all-woman police stations during the early 1990s in an attempt to effectively handle crimes against women.
- She commissioned an all-woman police battalion, a first for any state police force, in 2004. She also started the first all-woman commando unit as part of that battalion.
