State to get more rains in the next couple of days

The state received a record breaking copious rainfall this month due to the Northeast Monsoon as well as low pressure. Chennai, Thiruvallur, Cuddalore and Kancheepuram districts witnessed torrential showers resulting in inundation of the low lying areas, road damage and loss of property. However, the rainfall has considerably come down during the past couple of days as moisture was cut off by the North easterly winds. Schools were reopened on Wednesday after 19 extended holidays due to heavy rain across the state. 

The upper air cyclonic circulation persisting over South Andaman and Southeast Bay of Bengal was expected to intensify into a low pressure on Thursday but it remained the same. However, it is expected to form into a trough of low pressure during the next 24 hours, rainfall will commence over a few Delta districts on Friday while heavy rains will lash coastal districts. Most other parts will receive very heavy rain, the met report added. 

Cheyyur in Kancheepuram recorded 7 cms of rainfall during 24 hours ending at 8.30 AM on Thursday, Marakkanam recorded 5 cms while Mahabalipuram received 4 cms of rainfall.
