The river, which was earlier associated with dumped garbage and huts, has now turned into a fishing spot for the residents. People were thrilled to catch the fresh-water fish in the river. Since the quality of water increased after the recent influx from the Chembarambakkam lake, people, who were living near the banks, enjoyed netting the fish, which were in abundance. Children too were enjoying a dip in the water.
Before the recent rains, the Adyar river, which flowed through the heart of the city, was encroached with hutments and slum dwellings, especially near Saidapet. For the past decade, Adyar was known for its dirt, poverty and squalor. Earlier, the river also served as a dumping ground and used as an open sewage system.
However, the recent rains have improved the quality of water and residents are thrilled to see this change. After almost a decade, fishing activity has resumed in the area and many were spotted trying to hook a catch.
