Heavy rains disprove MET office forecast

In spite of the MET office issuing a forecast of rain-free weekend, the city was pounded by a spell of fresh rains on Friday.

Even as the weatherman predicted sunny days ahead for Chennai, various parts of the city received a fresh spell of heavy rains on Friday afternoon. According to the latest information from the Meteorology Department, there is no likelihood of heavy rains in the city from Saturday. However, the districts of Cuddalore, Thanjavur, Tiruvarur, Nagapattinam, and in neighbouring Puducherry and Karaikal could witness heavy to very heavy rains for the next two days. Heavy rainfall is also likely to occur in Tirunelveli and Kanyakumari for the next two days. 

The MET Office said that between Thursday and Friday morning, Cuddalore and Nagapattinam received the highest rainfall of 9 cm each. With respect to the NE monsoons, from October 1 to December 31, the average rainfall in TN used to be 44 cm. But as on date, 59 cm has been recorded. Similarly, for Chennai, the average rainfall used to be 79 cm, but so far the city has received more than 152 cm.

Chennai Airport to open

According to officials from the Airport Authority of India, the Chennai Airport could resume limited services starting on Saturday, to clear the stranded aircraft.
