People heaved a sigh of relief after the sky became clear by Saturday afternoon. But, the relief turned out to be a short-lived one since intermittent showers started lashing the city from the intervening night of Saturday and Sunday.

The showers continued throughout the day on Sunday triggering fears of inundation again in those areas , both in the city and the suburbs, where water started to recede on Saturday.

Besides the coastal districts, several areas in interior districts of Ariyalur, Coimbatore, Madurai, Erode, Virudhunagar, Dindigul and Theni experienced moderate to heavy rains.

In most places normal life was crippled due to the downpour. Transport movement was affected in most places. As roads have been badly affected and bridges washed away in many villages in different districts, ferrying of goods, especially essential items like vegetables, rice and grocery, to the Chennai city have been completely stopped. As a result, prices of these commodities have gone up manifold in Chennai city hurting people who are already battered by the downpour.

While Chennai city recorded a rainfal of 21.2 mm, the suburbs experienced 21 mm of rainfall during the 24 hours ending at 8.30 am, according to Meteorological department authorities here.

Rain or thundershowers might occur at many places in Tamil Nadu, Puducherry, Lakshadweep and at a few places over Kerala and south interior Karnataka for Sunday, according to the report of the meteorological department.

In particular, MeT authorities said that coastal districts of Tamil Nadu, including Cuddalore, are likely to receive “heavy to very heavy” rainfall in the next 24-48 hours.

Rain drops

  • Landline, mobile and internet services were getting restored in a phased manner in some parts of the city. But, some places faced problems due to equipment problem.
  • As rains lashed on and off, several localities like Mudichur and Oorappakkam, on the outskirts of Chennai city, witnessed severe inundation again.
  • Over 3,50,000 people were rescued by Central and State agencies. At least 245 people have died in rain-related incidents since October 1.
  • Power has been restored in several parts of the city including areas like Velachery, Madipakkam and Adyar which were severely inundated.
