IIT-M and Railways tie up for research centre

The Indian Institute of Technology (IIT) Madras has signed a Memorandum of Understanding (MoU) with the Indian Railways to set up a Centre for Railway Research.

The Centre will offer degree, postgraduate and PhD programmes in research related to Railways and involve students in research projects offering railway technology related courses. Prof Krishnan Balalsubramanian, Dean, Industrial Consultancy and Sponsored Research (IC & SR), IIT Madras said, “IIT Madras looks forward to a longterm association with Indian Railways for development of smart, efficient, comfortable and safe transport systems using cutting edge R&D through CRR at IIT-M.” 

Through this MoU, the Centre plans to carry out research related to structural health monitoring of Railway infrastructure by embedded intelligence, intelligent transportation, computer vision and  imaging technologies and advanced techniques for trains control and communication. A programme advisory committee, comprising officers from Indian Railways and IIT-M faculty will be formed and a multi-disciplinary approach adopted for research.

The Centre for Railway Research will form research programme groups in each field comprising professors and faculty members from IIT-M with railway officers. Experts from the Centre for Railway Research will be given specialised training in railway technology in India and abroad. Railway officers will be deputed to the Centre to participate in research and development work as also for short and long-term training programmes.
