Cops still clueless on Whatsapp bomb hoax in schools
Kancheepuram police are yet to trace the caller who made the hoax call that disrupted the classes in over 300 schools in the city and the suburbs on Tuesday. Chennai police have dropped the investigation as there is no provision to trace the origin of a Whatsapp message.

Though the hoax call was originally made to a school in Kelambakkam, a miscreant used Whatsapp to circulate the message among mobile users in Chennai, resulting in widespread panic “None of the schools in Chennai city received a bomb threat call. The parents panicked and rushed to take their children from schools. We cannot trace the origin of a message on Whatsapp and thus we cannot take action against the person who spread this hoax message,” a senior police official attached to the City Cyber Crime Branch told DT Next .
It may be recalled that there was a proposal to bring the Whatsapp services under their scanner, it was shot down. Meanwhile, Kelambakkam police said the cyber-crime wing is trying to trace the caller who had made a call to the school. “Investigation is on but we have not traced the caller yet,” a Kelambakkam police official said.
