Clearing the air with regard to the controversy surrounding the BJP on the intolerance issue ahead of Tamil Nadu Assembly elections due in the next three to four months, Party MP and National Spokesperson Meenakshi Lekhi today said the entire campaign on intolerance was aimed at tarnishing the good work done after Prime Minister Narendra Modi assumed power at the Centre.
Addressing members of the BJP’s social media wing in the city, Meenakshi Lekhi said the BJP is the most tolerant party. Stating that the party believed in inclusiveness, she said “the intolerance issue gained momentum after the Dadri lynching incident.”
“Now, if the law and order of the State government failed to control the situation, how is Modi government to be blamed,” she asked. Meenakshi Lekhi urged the volunteers to make use of social media platforms like Twitter and Facebook to highlight the good work done by the BJP in its 500 days in office. “But don’t be abusive,” she advised them.
She also urged the party cadres to counter allegations made by those in the opposition by asking valid questions. On the issue of terror attacks in Pathankot, she said the government had acted fast on the inputs provided. She said inclusiveness in the nation was felt as people living in the north including herself felt connected with Chennai when the floods wreaked havoc.
Speaking on a variety of issues including ban on beef, Chennai floods and the Pathankot terror attacks, Meenakshi said, “If a law has been enacted, it needs to be followed.” Pointing out that 22 States currently follow the ban on cow slaughter, including Tamil Nadu, she sought to know whether anybody had questioned Middle-East countries as to why eating pork was banned.
Speaking on the occasion, BJP State Unit President Tamizhisai Soundararajan said a single tweet reached a whopping 52 lakh people living in the State at any given point in time. She asked the volunteers to make use of all social media platforms available to spread the positive work that’s been undertaken by the government headed by Mr Modi.
BJP national general secretary and Tamil Nadu in-charge P Muralidhar Rao and National head, IT and social media, BJP, Amit Malviya, were also present on the occasion.
