The Anti-piracy cell of CB-CID registered 278 cases in Chennai alone in 2015 for selling fake products. They seized and destroyed several cartons of such products from the Chennai outlets. Sources at the Anti-Piracy cell told DtNext that many who purchase fake mobiles and other electronic goods from places like Burma Bazaar know that they are buying fake ones. Many others believe that what they are getting is genuine and are even ready to pay a higher price.

But a greater cause for concern is the influx of duplicate cosmetics and baby products in the market. “These products are sold through cosmetic stores and through stationery shops in the city. Only a company expert can differentiate between the original and the fake product and the public has no way of checking them. Many of these products use substandard material that can cause serious health issues to those who use them,” a senior police official attached to the Anti-Piracy Cell said. The video piracy cell gets to know about these violations only when the company representatives prefer a complaint.

Officials said there are several agents and groups in Chennai who specialise in the sale of fake products. They buy fake products from Mumbai and take them to Chennai by train. However, the investigators have found out that these products are actually made in China and then imported to Mumbai. Hence Mumbai works as the wholesale hub of fake products to the rest of the country.

  • People pay the price of the original and get fake ones.
