Police have arrested Maruthupandi (40), a native of Thalaivan Kotttai, Tirunelveli and Jyothi alias Arul Jyothi (33), a native of Alankulam, Tirunelveli. Police said Maruthupandi, a sub-contractor, conspired to eliminate Venkateshwralu, who was working as the vice president of Kalpatharu Power Transmissions Limited, as Venkateshwaralu cancelled a tender awarded to Maruthupandi for erection of a power transmission tower.

Maruthupandi deputed his associate Jyothi and Siva to eliminate Venkateshwaralu, fearing that he might not get any contract from the company if the deceased continued in the post. Police said the accused stayed in Chennai with some hired killers and shadowed Ventakeshwaralu at his office in Anna Nagar and his residence at Kumaran Colony.

On January 12, when Venkateshwaralu was returning to his car after visiting a clinic at Kumaran Colony, the assailants hit him with a wooden log and then hacked him to death.

Venkateshwaralu’s driver,  Arumugham, who tried to save him was also hacked. Police said the driver told the police the assailants could probably have come from Tirunelveli going by the accent of their speech, and police started probing the recent deals of the company and soon zeroed in on the prime accused.

Police said Venkateshwaralu cancelled the tender awarded to Maruthupandi after he found out large-scale corruption behind the deal and had awarded the tender to another contractor.Police have launched the hunt for others wanted in the case.
