DMK chief visits court, cadre violate rules

The Principal Sessions Court on the HC campus here was unusually busy on Monday as DMK president M Karunanidhi came to appear in a defamation case. The proceedings lasted just 20 seconds with the case being adjourned to March 10. The five-time former CM spent over 20 minutes outside the court to interact with media.

Wheelchair bound Karunanidhi, accompanied by his daughter Kanimozhi, son M K Stalin and other party leaders like Arcot Veerasamy, Durai Murugan, T R Baalu and Dayanidhi Maran, was present in the court at 10 am sharp. After being seated in an adjacent room, Karunandihi was taken to the court hall just before Judge N Adhinathan was to enter. Acknowledging the presence of Karunanidhi, he posted the case to a later date.

Rules Flouted:

Despite clear-cut procedures about obtaining a pass before entering the high court premises, many gained access. As per rules all of them have to mention the case for which they are entering and show an ID card as address proof.

DMK leaders packed the court room and jostled to leave after the adjournment.

Use of cameras is strictly prohibited but many were in action. Every one including the advocates was armed with phone cameras and was clicking a visual of their leader. DMK members also raised slogans like ‘Stop filing false cases against our leader’. Advocates swiftly tried to silence them saying they can’t afford to do that in the court any more.

Asked why he decided to appear in this case while in others he had obtained a stay, Karunanidhi said he was still trying to figure out what defamation he had committed.

Of late, defamation cases were being filed not only for speaking against the government but also for speaking about the government, he remarked.
