The PWD officials were put on alert however they assert there is no need to panic. Speaking to DT Next, M Bhakthavatchalam, Superintending Engineer, Palar Basin Circle, PWD, Chennai Region said, “We are continuously monitoring the situation and this is not monsoon season. Further, we are always on standby and there is no any alarming situation. Further, since water is being drawn for drinking water supply, water level from reservoirs is also gradually receding. So, if there is rain too, it would only fill water again”. He also added that there is no inflow of water to any water-bodies and everything is normal.

The PWD has planned to chart master project, which included construction of ramparts, strengthening of bunds and fencing. “If the master project is executed, then we can save water in large quantity and avoid natural calamities like flooding,” said another official, requesting anonymity.

MP Durairaj, a member, Tamil Nadu Retired PWD Engineers Association says that “There may be rain at any time, protection is in our hand. Even small quantity of rainwater can help increase water level in water-bodies and it is the time the officials concerned look into the matter.”

According to meteorological department, from January 23 to 28, the sky would partly be over cast. Further, there would be light rain on January 25. Officials also added that Chennai airport received 1.5 cm and other parts received drizzling and moderate rains.
