Why did you choose football as a sport for forming a women’s wing?

Chennai Football Association has a successful league for men with 94 teams participating and now has started to focus on women’s league as well to promote the sport. It is in existence since 1933 and its senior division also attracts players from overseas. In the women’s wing, there are juniors and seniors and with the start of the league, the bench and perennial match fitness can be achieved.

What kind of audiences does football have among women in India or Chennai?

Indian women football ranks in highest 50s in FIFA rating and has started attracting crowds all throughout. With the success of ISL we hope that the crowd participation will be much higher.

What are the different facets of this wing — will it be concentrating only on the physical aspect?

The women’s wing will start organising the league and in the process work towards improving skills and competitiveness of the players. It’s primary aim is towards making this a professional sport.
