What is the significance of celebrating Republic Day in schools?

Celebrating national occasions like Independence Day and Republic Day is extremely important, more so for schools. It helps in instilling love and pride for our nation among the students. The kids usually celebrate birthdays and other important days in their personal lives with family and friends. But national occasions like Republic Day brings them together as fellow Indians.

How do you make them realise the importance of being a Republic on this special day?

In our school, we have the Investiture ceremony on Republic Day. The new school council elected by the students take over from the old one. It was a conscious decision to coincide both the occasions. Students need to understand the value of democracy, leadership and pride for the country. In addition, we have flag hoisting ceremony, dance and song programme, speech by me highlighting the importance of being a Republic and we end the day by singing the National Anthem.

Do students absent themselves from celebrating Republic Day these days?

While there are students, who choose to bunk school on January 26, especially since there is no attendance for the day; there are many who enjoy coming to school on the day since they don’t have to lug their bags, stay only for an hour and those who are elected to student council feel important.
