Due to this, the water level is gradually receding in these lakes spurring the Public Works Department (Water Resource Management) to take up some lake improvement work like desilting and deepening the lake level to help save more water in the near future. PWD sources said it would be easy for officials to take up bunds-related work, desilting and deepening.
“The right time has come to take up improvement work and we have already sent a proposal for this. Further, the last monsoon left heavy rains and flooding and we will henceforth be proactive so that the same situation does not recur,” said M Bhakthavatchalam, Superintending Engineer (SE), Palar Basin Circle, PWD Chennai Region.
PWD had prepared lake rehabilitation work plans and they were continuously monitoring the water level. “Desiliting canals is also imperative because if canals are in proper condition, there will be no flooding,” said another engineer.
