Doubts about the stability of the structure were raised as it stood just a few metres from the structure, which collapsed on June 28, 2014, killing 61 workers. This had led to DMK leader M K Stalin moving the High Court seeking a CBI probe into the collapse as well as raze the second tower on safety consideration.
However, with the Kancheepuram District Collector favouring the demolition of the building after a survey and the Supreme Court upholding the demolition decision, the developers along with the district administration and CMDA had assured the High Court on safe demolition of the building.
When the matter came up before Chief Justice Sanjay Kishan Kaul and Justice R Mahadevan for hearing on Friday, CMDA’s counsel assured the bench that the building will be demolished on or before September 30. The bench accepted the submission and adjourned the case to November 4, for fur ther hearing. CMDA had also submitted that the deal to demolish the semi-finished building by implosion technique has also been finalised and work had commenced. It may be noted that while 48 people had booked flats in the collapsed building paying Rs 17.68 crore, the number of persons who had bought flats in the second tower was not known.
