Suspect in Kovai girl’s murder attempts suicide

Dhanya a 23-year-old woman was brutally murdered by a man on Wednesday evening for spurning his love and getting ready to marry another person of her parent’s choice. She became the sixth victim of similar crime in the state. 

Jahir the accused, who drank poison and boarded a bus to Palakkad was said to be stable. At present he was in the ICU of a private hospital in Palakkad. Police personal were on the guard. 

Police said that they would be able to get full details of the incident only on inquiring him, which would happen after he recovers and was discharged. Meanwhile in Coimbatore the body of the girl was handed over to her family after post mortem. 

Sources said the woman, a resident of Annur was pursued by Jahir of the same area to accept his love proposal. But Dhanya kept rejecting his plea. 

He used to stalk her till recently and the neighbours seem to be aware of it. 

Dhanya informed her parents about the menace and they have called Jahir and warned him not to indulge in such actions in future. 

Following this incident, Dhanya’s parents got her engaged to a school teacher Dinesh ten days ago and their marriage was fixed to take place in October. 

Irritated by the development, Jahir decided to kill Dhanya. He was looking for an appropriate opportunity. On Onam day when Dhanya went out with her fiancé and returned home around 5 pm. Her father suddenly took ill and her parent left her alone at home and went to the hospital. Making use of the opportunity Jahir entered the house through the back door and hacked her to death with a knife and fled from the spot. 

When Dhanya’s parents returned, they were shocked to see her girl lying in a pool of blood. They informed the police and the Annur police team alerted the Palakad police as Jahir was a native of Palakad. Police also suspected that Jahir may try to commit suicide. The Palakkad police informed the Tamil Nadu police that Jahir was admitted to a hospital in Palakkad after consuming poison. A team of officers rushed to Palakkad to investigate the case further. Meanwhile relatives of Dhanya protested outside the house demanding arrest of Jahir. They prevented the police from taking her body for post-mortem. 

Police assured them of immediate action and later the relatives relented.
