School students rally to preserve Perungudi lake

To highlight the importance of lake conservation and observe the ‘World Water Monitoring Day’, the PLANET (Perungudi Lake Area Neighbourhood Environmental Transformation), an association established with a vision to protect the Perungudi lake conducted a ‘walk the lake’ rally on Saturday evening.

School students take part in a rally to highlight the importance of lake conservation in Perungudi

Chennai

Students of Nagamani Adigal School, St. Pius Matriculation School and Montfort Matriculation School participated enthusiastically along with their families and friends from the Perungudi neighbourhood.

The rally started from the School Road and culminated at Kallu Kuttai through the banks of the lake.

The students carried placards stressing on the importance of water and lake conservation. The rally was flagged off by Ravikumar, principal of St. Pius School and Mangiarkkarasi, headmistress of the Nagamani Adigal School. The PLANET members also decided to carry out periodical water quality monitoring at Perungudi lake, open wells and bore wells in the lake neighbourhood.

The association has also decided to hold demonstration of experiments that highlight the physical and chemical properties of water in all the schools in the neighbourhood. The members will also educate children about the methods of cleansing contaminated water, president of the organisation Suresh Kuppusamy said.
