Judicial probe begins in custodial death of Kannagi Nagar youth

The Uthiramerur magistrate has started a judicial probe into the alleged custodial death of Karthik alias Meenkolambu Karthik (24) at Kannagi Nagar police station.

Karthik had died in police custody after he was picked up in connection with a chain snatching incident, were he along with his associates attacked a 22-year-old software employee, dragged her on the road when she held on to the hands of one of the snatchers who were in an auto and later hacked a provision store owner who came to the rescue of the woman. 

Karthik, collapsed and was declared brought dead at Stanley hospital and his relatives had alleged that police had beaten him to death during interrogation. 

Following this incident, the City Commissioner of Police had ordered the suspension of Head Constable Vijayakumar and Sub Inspector Backiaraj attached to the Kannagi Nagar police station. 

Meanwhile, the Thoraipakkam crime inspector S Kothandaraman, who was the one who picked up the accused in the chain snatching case that happened in his jurisdiction, suffered a cardiac arrest on Thursday. He has been admitted to the Apollo Hospital at Perungudi. 

Sources said that the inspector had been sought an explanation regarding his involvement in the custodial death of the youth.
