However, they managed to get away with 11 sovereigns of gold jewellery.
Police said Meenakshi, who was staying alone at her house in Chitlapakkam was befriended by a person who had first came to her house under the pretext of purchasing an apartment which Meenakshi’s daughter-in-law Ashwini has put up for sale.
The apartment is located next to Meenakshi’s house and a decently dressed person came to her house two days back and expressed interest in seeing the apartment.
Meenakshi showed him the apartment. The youth came again to Meenakshi’s house on September 22 and asked for the documents of the apartment for verification. Meenakshi gave him the property documents, he checked them and gave them back promptly.
However, on Friday evening, the youth once again came to Meenakshi’s house with another person. Since Meenakshi had become familiar with the person, she let them in. The duo asked for some water to drink. When Meenakshi went inside the kitchen to bring water, they followed her and using an old cloth from the house, gagged her.
One of the men pulled out a knife and threatened Meenakshi to hand over the valuables in the house.
What happened next was straight out of a comical Tamil movie.
The robbers collected the valuables from the victim and when one of them was trying to put back the knife between his trousers and waist, he got cut himself and started bleeding.
The robbers were scared seeing the blood and rushed out of the house. They jumped on to their two-wheeler but even after several attempts they could not start their bike. In fear they ran away from the spot abandoning the vehicle on the spot of the crime.
Managing to free herself, Meenakshi came out and lodged a complaint with the Chitlapakkam police. Police have secured the bike of the robbers and have launched a hunt for the culprits.
