I am currently pursuing Engineering from a private college in the city. But I would like to pursue graphic designing in the future. I have been told, in India, NID Ahmedabad is one of the best places to pursue Graphic Design. Is it true? Also, what are the other options and kindly tell me about the prospects? — Shravya Sampath

Though you have specifically mentioned about graphic designing, I am wondering whether you are aware of other specialised design arenas.

At the basic level, as a graphic designer you should be well versed in Adobe Creative Suite consisting of Photoshop, InDesign and Illustrator. If you are interested in drawing and sketching, Graphic Design is the right choice for you. The employment in the field of graphic designing is growing at 13 per cent in India and globally, as fast as the average for all occupations combined. The trend is likely to continue until 2018. The demand has risen from media and computer design firms.

The field is expanding along with technology in areas like web design, advertising, marketing and print, etc. The massive growth potential offers part-time, full-time or freelancing options to potential graphic designers. If you want to be a freelancer, build your professional reputation and present them eloquently. You have to reach out to employers offline and maximise your online presence. In both the cases, you need to have a good grasp of the trends in the field.

The demand for designers is also producing far too many individuals who lack an understanding of the trends or professionalism. On the other hand, with more and more people entering the field, the competition is becoming stiff, individuals with website design and animation experience will have an edge over their peers who are only familiar with adobe-package. Since the interactive media is at the forefront, those who prepare themselves only to pursue a career in print publishing will become less relevant.

National Institute of Design is highly reputed but its other campuses in Gujarat and Bengaluru too have a high standard in the lines of Ahmedabad and offer similar courses. There are also numerous private design schools that are equally good and ensure placements.

The designing sector is grouped into four broad categories, namely Communication Design, IT Integrated Design, Industrial Design and Textile Design.

You have the option to enter into Industrial Design with your engineering background. Your engineering degree can support you to think more creatively. It includes Ceramic and Glass Design, Furniture and Interior Design, Product Design, Toy and Game Design and Transportation and Automobile Design. There are around 30 specific designing courses that one can choose at post-graduate diploma level.

A graphic designer is worth his value only if he/she has developed the ability to create visually stimulating images. This is one field that does not look into your experience; all that one has to do is to produce a design that will speak for itself.
