KAMPERS seek vehicle pass to cross Sholinganallur-Medavakkam toll plaza

This pass is given to cars and autos of residents living along the project road. A resident must submit documents and a non-refundable administrative fee of Rs. 100 to possess the pass, following which exemptions will be given. However, most of the residents of Kailash Nagar, Rathinam Nagar, Sairam Nagar, Shanthi Nagar, Gurudev Colony, Mookambigai Nagar, Perumal Nagar, Indira Priyadarshini Nagar, Krishna Nagar, Prabhu Nagar, and Anandammal Nagar who are part of the KAMPERS Welfare Association are not benefitted by this. A majority of them work in the IT companies in OMR and have to cross the Sholinganallur-Perumbakkam-Medavakkam Road toll plaza every day. 

“I have to spend Rs 50 to commute back and forth from my home to office every day. We live close to the toll plaza and therefore a pass is a must and will save us a lot of money,” says S. Shankar, an IT professional. 

As per the toll rates, a motorist driving a car spends Rs 25 for a single trip; Rs 50 (if it involves the return journey too). The return trip is valid for 24 hours. For multiple entry the fee is Rs 80 and is valid only for 24 hours. Motorists can also opt for a monthly pass of Rs 1950 that allows multiple entries. 

In August the KAMPERS Welfare Association, Perumbakkam reached out to TNRDC and wrote to the Chief Minister’s grievance cell asking for the LRP. “We were told that we do not qualify for the exemption because Perumbakkam does not come under the list of villages along the project road,” says K. Sarangadass, president of KAMPERS Welfare Association.

The residents wrote to TNRDC again, stating, “Residents living in the colonies adjacent to IT toll road use the stretch for their mundane activities — visit hospitals, hotels and other commercial establishments along OMR. “As per the TNRDC website, Sholinganallur-Medavakkam Road is considered as IT road. Hence, we have requested them to consider our case and provide LRP,” he says.

When contacted, an official of the TNRDC said, “LRP is given to the residents along the road and the radius along the stretch is not considered. Residents have the option to go with the concession pass that is priced lower than the usual toll charges.”
